At the start of the season there was a hurried email conversation about the format of the leagues.

In that conversation we eventually chose to have two divisions in the league.  In the conversation many participant jumped on the phrase "we will have more competitive matches".  I'll agree that we had more matches in competition, but I do not agree that we had more matches where there was genuine competition between the teams.

We now have some months before the start of next season's leagues.  I realize that we cannot finalize the league structure until we know how many teams we will have, but I do think we could do some planning.  Personally, I would like us to abandon the format where we are required to stick in our fixed divisions for a full season, in favour of some structure that will stir up the teams more frequently and give us matches with genuine competition.

I'm not sure what you are proposing? a move away from a league structure? The feedback i have had from our club members is very positive (not just because of the finishing positions of Devizes!).

Most of our games have been competitive. I am not sure however if there were for example 4 strong teams within Wiltshire how stiring up the teams more frequently will give more genuine competition. After all most teams do not have a high turnover of players which will effect there team performance.

I'm not making a specific proposal yet.  I'd like to get a conversation going.  I have some thought starters

  • do promotion and relegation twice per season
  • smaller divisions (less spread of ability) and play each opposing team three times instead of twice
  • split each division at christmas and play top half/bottom half separately for the rest of the season
  • somone else's suggestion (anyone got an idea or two?)

Richard,

I'll give my view from someone who tried to co-ordinate the leagues this year. The league format we decided on at league start took around 2 weeks for me to compile fixtures efficiently and publish with the individual club secretaries. It was hard work - but once it was done it was a low maintenance job to keep it ticking over. I do genuinely fear increasing that overhead in fixture generation, and doing that more than once per season brings me out in a cold sweat.

I also think this will increase the overhead for clubs in new fixtures having to be arranged throughout the season. We only had 3-4 occasions this season of fixtures not being played - given the number of games played that's not bad. I fear this will increase if teams have to re-organise their fixture calendars during the season.

On the subject of being more competitive in matches, I can only really give my experience from the games I played in. I think I played better volleyball from playing more fixtures against better opposition. As the league fixture secretary I did see the scoresheet from every game played. I was also pleased to see 2-1 results rather than 3-0, as that tells me a game was played competitively until the last point was scored - and there was a pleasing number of 2-1 results to report. Some genuine surprises in the Premier league too.

Saying that - this is all my opinion, and you have raised a valid question. I think its something which needs to be discussed and agreed at a WVA meeting attended by all clubs. I will of course support with whatever structure the league decides, but I would have to reconsider my current duties as league secretary if I believed the overheads would increase too much for me personally.

As we haven't got together formally this season, we should probably make the effort to have such a meeting to round of the season and look forward to the next one. My suggestion would be about halfway through the closed season.

Any volunteers to propose a date/time/venue?

Perhaps a meeting at the end of July before the summer holidays to catch as many people as possible.

With regards to a WVA meeting i think we should propose that clubs send at least two members along to the meeting. Paul has done a great effort with the league, has as Irwin with Competitions, Lyns with Ladies League and Serena with Treasurer this season but the 'willing volunteers' are getting less and less. We currently have no chair, vice chair, ladies league co-ordinator (Lyns standing down for next season). I think we need to encourage people to actively help out as without people volleyball in Wiltshire would be non-existent. Having said this i am not in a position to commit more time to volleyball with the coaching commitments i have currently.
