The Competitions Secretary is responsible for three events: the
Pre-Season Tournament, the End of Season Tournament and the Dave Kinder
Cup.
Pre-Season Tournament
The Pre-Season Tournament has two competitions: the Shield competed
for by our top teams and the Plate for the lower division teams, and
was played at Christie Miller Sports Centre. The Shield had a
disappointing three teams entered and was won convincingly by Wootton
Bassett A. Runners-up on points difference from Devizes 6X were Aquae
Sulis. The Plate had six teams and was won by Intel Swindon (now
defunct) with Wootton Bassett B, Melksham VBC and Devizes Barrels all on
the same points in second place. However, Wootton Bassett B had a
better points difference by just 2 points and won the Runners-up
position.
End of Season Tournament
The End of Season Tournament also has two competitions and was
played at Larkhill. The Cup had four teams entered and all made the
semi-finals! The final was played between Devizes 6X and Aquae Sulis and
was the closest for many years. The final score was 27-25, 25-27, 15-8
to Aquae Sulis. The Plate had six teams and again had a close final with
Devizes Barrels eventually overpowering the Famous Bassett Bees in the
last few points. Particular thanks go to Lynsay Scratchley and John
Postance for their assistance and venue management at Larkhill.
Dave Kinder Cup
This trophy is open to all Wiltshire local league teams and is an
un-seeded knockout cup. There were 12 teams entered but this year there
were no surprises with Olympiad, Devizes, Aquae Sulis and Wootton
Bassett Premier Division teams competing in the semi finals. Olympiad
and Wootton Bassett made through to the finals but a suitable date could
not be agreed until next October. My one recommendation to the new
Competitions Secretary would be to set the date in October for the next
final and stick to it ‘come what may’!
